Nuremberg: Day 2 (9/06/19)

Nuremberg: Day 2 (9/06/19)

Up early again, well an hour later than yesterday since things don’t open till 10:00 or 12:00 it seems, and walked an hour to the Nuremberg Trials Museum/Courthouse. The city was totally deserted on the way over, whole four-lane streets with not a soul in sight an just the occasional car. But it was peaceful so I’m not going to argue. I liked the museum exhibit mostly due to the sheer amount of information they had, which I worked my way through via a smooth talking audio-guide since the whole exhibit was only in German text.

I learned quite a bit about the trials which is exactly what I was looking for with my visit, such as how they followed American legal system, with witness testimony and cross-examination playing a large role. As well as how the defense was placed at a deliberate disadvantage in terms of time and resources they could use to prepare. They also had a wealth of recordings from the guilty parties admitting so some of the things they ordered, which were absolutely horrifying to listen to as is the point. It was also interesting to see how the museum portrayed the war from a German perspective. I noticed there was almost a fixation on the fact that there was a racial motivation behind the Nazi’s aggressive expansion. It was stated easily five or six times throughout the exhibit.

It took me about two and half hours but I listened to every recording they had in English. Afterwards I walked back to town along a pleasant river path that featured a lovely waterwheel which made for the perfect spot to sit and have a snack. I got the feeling that just a few minutes outside of the historical downtown the city is relatively quiet.

I made budget harira tonight, replacing the a few of the ingredients I couldn’t find with stuff like corn and kidney beans. Didn’t turn out bad per say but it definitely more closely resembled a chili than a traditional soup by the end. The kitchen at this hostel is pretty bad: melted cutting boards, no knives over an inch long, crappy electric stove, and only a couple sets of dishes/silverware. But its cheap and relatively quiet so whatever. Three new guys arrived around midnight and are obvious party animals who have no sense of volume. They also brought their scooters up to the room and left them scattered all over so you have to weave your way through a jungle gym to get in or out of the room. R.I.P.
