Tallinn To Kiev (9/27/19)
I left early this morning to catch the bus to the Tallinn airport for my flight to Kyiv. I did catch the correct one a few blocks from my hostel, though I confused the hell out of the driver when I asked if it was the correct bus until we agreed on “aeroport!” as my destination. Also pretty sure he didn’t charge me or anything and I have no idea why. My bag got searched at the sercurity check, again, like always which isn’t even a surprise anymore. I found my gate and a gorgeous Estonia piano that was tucked next to an empty lounge area. Which of course I played and I have to say it was a really nice instrument, very responsive. I ended up spending my whole waiting time before my flight playing and I noticed the lounge start to fill up with people that didn’t seem to be doing anything, whether they sat down to listen or what I don’t know. But a mom and her kid stopped by to listen to Fantasia and the kid clapped afterward which totally made my day!
My flight was normal, though I did notice that while spoken instructions were in Estonian while written ones were consitently in English which I just thought was interesting. I landed and caught the airport shuttle bus downtown and eventually arrived at the central metro station. I couldn’t figure out the subway system so I just hiked through the cold and rainy evening to my hostel 40 minutes away.
Not terribly comfortable, but I got to see the off streets at night which was an experience. Got lost, found the right road, couldn’t find the hostel entrance for a while, but eventually I did make it to the ZigZag hostel. I warmed up some leftover stirfry for dinner and had a two hour long conversation with a German IT tech living in Switzerland about life and how ridiculous politics are.
