Zagreb: Day 1 (10/13/19)
Went out on one of my patented “walks with a destination but no route” at about 1pm today (woke up late because I stayed up previewing the new season of anime). I cut through a dog park at some point and was surprised by the amount of sculptures and damn good graffiti decorating it. The old town center is on top of a large hill which I accessed via a metric buttload of stairs straight up the side that left me panting by the end.
Lots of places on interest in the old town (plus some great Pokemon Go opportunities hehe) but St. Mark’s Church was by far the most visually impressive building. It was having mass so i didn’t enter in fear of being disruptive, instead opting to sit and have lunch at a panorama overlook nearby that was practically empty. Great views of the city and the Cathedral of Zagreb with its classic gothic towers.
After lunch I poped into the Museum of Broken Relationships, which the dramatic grou from yesterday recommened. I wasn’t sure what to expect but it was actually a pretty good museum! Basically a collection of donated items with little stories about their owners concerning, well, broken relationships. Not gonna lie, I was crying a little after a few.
After that I descended back into the city center, which was in the middle of a race! Navigating that was an adventure all in itself but eventually I ended up at the Zagreb Cathedral. Large, churchy, someone was practicing the organ intermittently. From there it was on to Tunel Gric, on the way to which I ran into a street performer in the midst of a jam that I stopped to listen to. Which was a good excuse to sit and cool down a bit from all the walking in the sun.
The tunner cut under the old city hill and was super long with appropriately creepy offshoots and noises. 10/10 would tunnel again. Emerging, I walked back to the hostel and relaxed for the evening. Tomorrow I fly to Thessaloniki, the 2nd largest city in Greece!
